Childhood memory from Marigot

I was born and raised in Marigot, and when I look at this photo, I am instantly transported back to my childhood.

The market used to take place on Saturdays under the beautiful century-old tree that Hurricane Irma uprooted in 2017. The entire town of Marigot gathered there on Saturday mornings, and there was a lot of hustle and bustle. Facing the market stalls were the boats arriving from Anguilla, bringing vegetables and salads. A little further on, you can see the Bord de Mer nursery and primary school. I remember the names of the teachers: Mr. Williams, Mrs. Hodge, Mrs. Manijean, Mrs. Peterson, Mrs. Hanson, and Mrs. Williams. When there was a big swell, the school had to be evacuated because the water would flood the classrooms and the courtyard.

My father lived behind the seaside. With my brother and our friends, we would cross the street from the church to go swimming at the small beach. People who lived in Marigot and Saint James would swim here; those from Sandy Ground swam in front of their homes, and residents of Agrément and Cripple Gate swam in Galisbay.

I remember the Beauperthuy family's store that sold ready-to-wear clothing for men, women, and children. We would buy our beautiful clothes for Easter, Christmas, and all life events there. I recall the day I went with my mom to find my First Communion dress. There weren't many stores in Marigot at that time; everyone came here to shop for clothing and shoes. In what would later become the Aventure nightclub, my maternal grandfather, Léopold Hyman, had his office. He was a notary public, helping people fill out paperwork, write letters, or perform any other administrative tasks.

I love looking at this photo, it immerses me in my beautiful childhood memories.

Souvenir d'enfance à Marigot

Je suis née et j’ai grandi à Marigot et lorsque je regarde cette photo, je suis instantanément ramenée en enfance.

Le marché avait lieu le samedi sous le bel arbre centenaire que le cyclone Irma a déraciné en 2017. Tout Marigot se retrouvait là le samedi matin, il y avait beaucoup d’animation. Face aux étals accostaient les bateaux qui arrivaient d’Anguilla et qui amenaient des légumes et des salades. Un peu plus loin, il y a l’école maternelle et primaire du Bord de mer. Je me souviens des noms des enseignants : M. Williams, Mme Hodge, Mme Manijean, Mme Peterson, Mme Hanson et Mme Williams. Quand il y avait une grosse houle, l’école était évacuée car l’eau montait dans les salles de classe et la cour.

Mon père habitait derrière le bord de mer. Avec mon frère et nos copains, nous traversions dans la rue de l’église pour aller nous baigner sur la petite plage. Ici se baignaient les gens qui habitaient à Marigot et Saint James ; les habitants de Sandy Ground se baignaient devant chez eux, et ceux d’Agrément et de Cripple Gate se baignaient à Galisbay.

Je me souviens de la boutique de la famille Beauperthuy qui vendait du prêt-à-porter pour hommes, femmes et enfants. On y achetait nos jolis vêtements pour les fêtes de Pâques, de Noël et tous les évènements de la vie. Je me rappelle très bien du jour où j’y suis allée avec ma maman pour trouver ma robe de Première Communion. Il n’y avait pas beaucoup de boutiques à cette époque à Marigot, tout le monde venait ici pour s’habiller et se chausser. Dans ce qui deviendra plus tard la discothèque l’Aventure, mon grand-père maternel Léopold Hyman avait son bureau. Il était écrivain public, il aidait les gens à remplir leurs papiers, faire des courriers ou tout autre travail administratif.

J’aime regarder cette photo, elle me plonge dans mes beaux souvenirs d’enfance.

This photograph was taken in 2016 by Patrick Gérard, a French photographer and friend. Patrick was visiting Saint-Martin for the first time to capture images of La Samanna hotel for an upcoming book.

To photograph all the different locations and atmospheres of the hotel from sunrise to sunset, it took a total of 15 days. Nonetheless, we managed to find some free moments to introduce him to the Friendly Island.

Since his arrival, Patrick had been very interested in Maho Beach with its clear and soft sand, turquoise and transparent water, and the large commercial airplanes that skim the beach every 5 to 10 minutes. He had a specific image in mind that he wanted to create. He planned to use a wide-angle lens to add depth and grandeur to the scene, position the subjects with their backs to the camera, and use a few accessories to add touches of color.

We set up around noon, just before the arrival of the KLM flight from Amsterdam, which was a Boeing 747 at the time, the largest aircraft to land on the island. We donned our accessories, including colorful hats, caps, t-shirts, and surfboards to bring vibrancy to the image. Then, we held our poses for several minutes as the plane approached for landing. The hat and cap were blown away by the "monster."

Being within 10 meters of a 747 about to land is an unprecedented and unique experience. It only lasts for a few seconds, but it is very impressive. The mission was accomplished: Patrick managed to capture the image he had in mind before returning to France.

Even today, this photo and its creation remain an indelible memory for each of us three.

Cette photographie a été prise en 2016 par Patrick Gérard, un photographe français et ami.

Patrick venait pour la 1ère fois à Saint-Martin pour faire des photographies de l'hôtel La Samanna pour la parution d’un livre.

Pour photographier tous les lieux et toutes les ambiances de l'hôtel du lever au coucher du soleil, pas moins de 15 jours ont été nécessaires. Nous avons quand même réussi à trouver quelques moments libres pour lui faire découvrir la Friendly Island.

Depuis son arrivée, Patrick était très intéressé par la plage de Maho avec son sable clair et doux, son eau turquoise et transparente et ses avions de ligne qui rasent la plage toutes les 5 à 10 minutes. Il souhaitait faire une photo qu'il avait imaginé dans sa tête. Il voulait utiliser un grand angle pour ajouter de l'espace et de la grandeur au spectacle, positionner les sujets de dos, et utiliser quelques accessoires pour amener quelques touches de couleur…

Nous nous sommes mis en place vers midi, peu de temps avant l'arrivée du vol KLM en provenance d'Amsterdam, à l'époque un Boeing 747, le plus gros appareil à se poser sur l’île.

Nous avons mis nos accessoires, chapeau, casquette, t-shirt et surf colorés pour donné du peps à l'image puis nous avons gardé la pose plusieurs minutes le temps de l’atterrissage. Le chapeau et la casquette ont été soufflés par le « monstre ».

C'est une expérience inédite et unique de se retrouver à moins de 10 mètres d'un 747 sur le point d’atterrir. Cela ne dure que quelques secondes mais c’est très impressionnant.

La mission était accomplie : Patrick a réussi à faire l’image qu’il avait en tête avant de repartir en France.

Aujourd’hui encore, cette photo et sa réalisation sont un souvenir impérissable pour chacun de nous trois.

Title of "Sweet St-Martin"

The idea for the book "SWEET ST MARTIN" was born from a negative comment. An American tourist, who had purchased the book PHOTOGRAPHY from one of our retailers, returned to the shop a few days later to share his impressions. He found it rather "nice" and "pleasant," but not quite "WOW"!

While my ego was somewhat bruised, I immediately understood his point of view.

The bright yellow cover raised expectations of a "postcard" book about the Friendly Island. However, the PHOTOGRAPHY book was more than that; its objective was to showcase 14 photographers, both professional and amateur, who live, work, and love Saint-Martin. The only constraint we imposed on them was to present their photographs of Saint-Martin. This book was intended for a readership somewhat initiated in the art of photography.

Nevertheless, even though I understood his criticism, receiving negative comments after so much work is never pleasant. So, I chose to rise to the challenge by creating an entirely new photography book titled "WOW." Turning the negative into a positive!

My goal?

To ensure that every page, every image evoked a "WOW" in the minds of the readers.

Easy, right?

I had the title and the theme, and now I had to gather spectacular images of our beautiful island: landscapes, drones, helicopters, aquatic scenes, sports, portraits, Carnival... everything was possible!

After selecting the best of my own photographs, exploring the island in every direction with my longtime companion Donovane (@donosxm), I contacted and collaborated with 25 local photographers who provided me with images, some of which I purchased, and others that were offered. I began sorting, selecting, and assembling to obtain the best of the best.

I quickly realized that a series of "spectacular" photos could diminish the impact of some, even if they were beautiful.

Too much beauty can overshadow more beauty!

So, I opted for a rhythm that alternated "WOW" images with others that were equally beautiful, colorful, and moving, but which would serve to enhance the more sensational images. A bit like composing a melody... using silences (breaks) to give more impact to the song.

Unfortunately, I had to give up the title I loved so much, which was in line with the project. I was very enthusiastic about designing a highly graphical cover with this word and its symmetry of "W" at the beginning and end. I wanted to retain the palm tree from the PHOTOGRAPHY cover to establish a connection between the two volumes. WOW would have been like PHOTOGRAPHY #2, as the concept was quite similar: collaborating with contemporary photographers to present today's photos.

However, the idea that some images might not be considered "WOW" was unsatisfying to me. Of course, this depends largely on individual subjectivity. Some people might have found certain images "WOW," while others might not, and vice versa.

It was time to turn the page and explore other avenues. After a few days and weeks, while observing an old red silicone 45 record printed by Discover Magazine in the 1980s, which sits on my desk as a decorative item, the idea for the title came to me: "Oh Sweet St Maarten’s Land." I decided to keep only "Sweet St Martin." This song is a well-known anthem for the island's residents and represents the territory as a whole, which was perfect.

I felt we were on the right track!

Then, Alexandra called me to discuss the editorial she had been working on for weeks, searching for the right words to present our project in the best way possible. She had an additional idea and wanted my opinion. In addition to the text, she wanted to incorporate some of the lyrics from the song "Oh Sweet St Maarten’s Land"...

I smiled and told her it was a beautiful idea. Thanks to her, I confirmed the title in my mind.

The book will now be called SWEET ST MARTIN, as it is the most beautiful tribute we can offer to our beloved island.

I often think of that American tourist I don't know, and I hope he was able to acquire this book and find it "Wow"!

L'idée du livre SWEET ST MARTIN est née d'un commentaire négatif.

Un touriste américain, ayant acheté le livre PHOTOGRAPHY chez l'un de nos revendeurs, est repassé par la boutique quelques jours plus tard pour faire part de ses impressions. Il l'a trouvé plutôt "sympa" et "agréable", mais pas assez "WOW" !

Tout en étant un peu blessé dans mon ego, j'ai tout de suite compris son point de vue.

La couverture jaune vif donnait l'espoir d'un livre "cartes postales" de la Friendly Island. Mais effectivement, le livre PHOTOGRAPHY n'est pas que ça, il a pour objectif de mettre en lumière 14 photographes, professionnels et amateurs, qui vivent, travaillent et aiment Saint-Martin. La seule contrainte que nous leur avons imposée : présenter leurs photographies de Saint-Martin. Ce livre se destinait donc à un public (un peu) initié à l'art de la photographie.

Pourtant, même si je comprenais sa critique, recevoir des commentaires négatifs après tant de travail n'est jamais agréable. Alors, j'ai choisi de relever ce défi en créant un tout nouveau livre de photographies intitulé "WOW". Transformer le négatif en positif !

Mon but ? Faire en sorte que chaque page, chaque image évoque un "WOW" dans l'esprit des lecteurs. Facile, non ?

J'avais le titre, le thème, il me restait maintenant à réunir des images spectaculaires de notre belle île : paysages, drones, hélicoptères, aquatiques, sports, portraits, Carnaval... tout est possible !

Après avoir sélectionné le meilleur de mes propres photographies, parcouru l'île dans tous les sens avec mon compagnon de toujours Donovane (@donosxm), j'ai contacté et collaboré avec 25 photographes locaux qui m'ont fourni des images, certaines que j'ai achetées, d'autres qui m'ont été offertes. J'ai commencé à trier, sélectionner et assembler afin d'obtenir le meilleur du meilleur.

J'ai rapidement compris qu'une succession de photos "spectaculaires" pouvait atténuer l'impact de certaines, même si elles étaient magnifiques. Trop de beau tue le beau !

J'ai donc opté pour un rythme alternant des images "WOW" avec d'autres, tout aussi belles, colorées et émouvantes, mais qui me serviraient à mettre en valeur les images plus sensationnelles. Un peu comme composer une mélodie... utiliser les silences (breaks) pour donner plus d'impact à la chanson.

Mais malheureusement, j'ai dû abandonner le titre que j'aimais tant et qui était en accord avec le projet. J'étais pourtant très enthousiaste à l'idée de concevoir une couverture très graphique avec ce mot et sa symétrie des "W" en début et en fin. Je voulais conserver le palmier de la couverture du PHOTOGRAPHY pour établir un lien entre les deux volumes. WOW aurait été comme le PHOTOGRAPHY #2 , car le principe était assez similaire : collaborer avec des photographes d'aujourd'hui pour présenter des photos d'aujourd'hui.

Cependant, l'idée que certaines images ne soient pas jugées assez "WOW" ne me satisfaisait pas. Bien sûr, cela dépend beaucoup de la subjectivité de chacun. Certaines personnes auraient probablement trouvé certaines images "WOW", tandis que d'autres non, et vice versa.

Il était donc temps de tourner la page et d'explorer d'autres pistes.

Après quelques jours et semaines, en observant un vieux 45 tours en silicone (rouge) imprimé par Discover Magazine dans les années 80, qui trône sur mon bureau comme un objet de décoration, l'idée du titre m'est venue : "Oh Sweet St Maarten’s Land" . J'ai décidé de conserver uniquement "Sweet St Martin". Cette chanson est un hymne bien connu des habitants de l'île et représente le territoire dans son ensemble, ce qui était parfait.

J'ai senti que nous étions sur la bonne voie ! Puis, Alexandra m'a appelé pour me parler de l'édito sur lequel elle avait travaillé pendant des semaines, cherchant les mots justes pour présenter notre projet de la meilleure manière possible. Elle avait une idée supplémentaire et souhaitait avoir mon avis. En plus du texte, elle voulait intégrer une partie des paroles de la chanson "Oh Sweet St Maarten’s Land"...

J'ai souri et lui ai dit que c'était une magnifique idée. Grâce à elle, j'ai validé mon titre en même temps dans ma tête.

Le livre s'appellera désormais SWEET ST MARTIN , car c'est le plus bel hommage que nous puissions rendre à notre île chérie.

Je pense souvent à ce touriste américain que je ne connais pas, et qui, j'espère, a pu se procurer ce livre et le trouver "Wow" !

Située sur l'île de Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten dans les Caraïbes, La Baie Orientale (Orient Bay en anglais) et La BO pour les locaux, est un petit coin de paradis qui a connu une transformation remarquable 40 ans.

Dans les années 80, La Baie Orientale était un endroit paisible et préservé, bordé de sable blanc et de cocotiers. Cependant, tout a changé lorsque le Concorde a atterri sur l'aéroport Princess Juliana en 1981, inaugurant ainsi une ère nouvelle pour cette plage pittoresque. L'arrivée de ce célèbre avion supersonique a marqué le début d'une transformation majeure pour Baie Orientale.

Le Concorde à Saint-Martin

Dans les annales de l'histoire de l'aviation, il y a peu d'appareils qui ont su captiver l'imagination et susciter l'émerveillement comme le Concorde. Ce chef-d'œuvre supersonique de l'ingénierie, fruit de la collaboration entre les constructeurs britanniques et français, a non seulement pulvérisé les records de vitesse, mais a également réalisé les rêves de voyageurs du monde entier.

L'histoire du Concorde s'entremêle de façon mémorable avec celle de Saint-Martin / Sint Maarten.

L'arrivée du Concorde à Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten dans les années 80 fut un événement inoubliable.

Le 6 février 1981, la totalité des habitants se sont retrouvés pour assister au tout premier atterrissage du Concorde sur la piste de l'aéroport Princess Juliana. Cet avion supersonique, affrété par un promoteur immobilier audacieux, a suscité un engouement planétaire.

Le vol du Concorde avait un objectif clair : présenter au monde le grand complexe touristique de Baie Orientale.

Le choix du Concorde, symbole d'élégance et de vitesse, visait à attirer l'attention sur ce projet ambitieux, et ce fut un succès retentissant. À son bord, 60 passagers dont des célébrités françaises de renom telles qu'Alain Delon et Mireille Darc ont été spécialement invitées pour marquer cette occasion historique.

Pourtant, l'histoire du Concorde à Saint-Martin ne s'arrête pas là.

Le 16 décembre 1989, l'île a eu l'honneur de recevoir à nouveau l'avion Supersonique, mais cette fois-ci avec une visite encore plus exceptionnelle. Le président de la République française, François Mitterrand. Cette visite avait une dimension politique, car elle incluait une rencontre avec le président américain George W. Bush.

L'arrivée du Concorde avec le président Mitterrand à son bord a renforcé davantage la réputation de Saint-Martin en tant que destination de prestige et d'importance internationale. Cela a également mis en évidence la polyvalence du Concorde en tant que moyen de transport pour des personnalités de haut niveau.

Ces événements ont laissé une empreinte indélébile dans l'histoire de Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten. Ils ont renforcé la réputation de l'île en tant que destination de choix dans les Caraïbes et ont marqué ces moments comme des chapitres uniques dans l'histoire de l'aviation et du tourisme caribéens, où le Concorde a joué un rôle de premier plan.

On February 6, 1981, the entire population gathered to witness the very first landing of the Concorde on the runway of Princess Juliana Airport. This supersonic aircraft, chartered by a daring real estate developer, sparked global excitement.

The Concorde's flight had a clear purpose: to showcase the grand tourist complex of Baie Orientale to the world. The choice of the Concorde, a symbol of elegance and speed, aimed to draw attention to this ambitious project, and it was a resounding success. Onboard were 60 passengers, including renowned French celebrities like Alain Delon and Mireille Darc, specially invited to mark this historic occasion.

However, the Concorde's story in Saint-Martin didn't end there.

On December 16, 1989, the island had the honor of welcoming the supersonic plane once again, but this time with an even more exceptional visit. Tales of Axel Hubler

The old Juliana runway.
Originally constructed by the US Army in 1942, it remained relatively unchanged until the 1960s.

The original terminal location can still be seen near the village of Simpson Bay. It was a simple, small building.

In 1964, the terminal was moved, and that's when the airport was officially named "Queen Juliana" and later became "Princess" upon the monarch's abdication on April 30, 1980.

The first regular flight was operated by KLM to Curaçao, which took more than three hours.

I remember as a child, my grandparents used to travel back to France by boat, typically on the "Antilles" cruise ship. Crossing the Atlantic in a Constellation aircraft was a grueling journey of over twenty hours, with a layover in the Azores.

My grandparents told me that on those poorly soundproofed planes, overnight flights had bunk beds, a luxury service called the "Comet d'Or."

Then came the era of Caravelles.

For us kids, flying was a rare experience.

The first time was to go to Guadeloupe, and the second was to Trinidad.

It wasn't until the mid-1980s that our island had a direct weekly flight to Paris. Before that, we had to leave the day before and stay overnight in Guadeloupe because the flight to the capital departed very early.

I can still picture the terrace at Raizet in Pointe-à-Pitre, the farewells, the goodbyes, the blown kisses, and the wiped tears.

Traveling to Europe was a luxury; the cheapest ticket cost 12,000 francs!

L'ancienne piste de Juliana.
Initiallement construite par l'armée américaine en 1942. Elle restera relativement inchangée jusqu'aux années 60.

On voit l'emplacement originel du terminal, proche du village de Simpson Bay. Il s'agissait simplement d'une case pays .

Celui-ci sera déplacé en 1964, année où l'on baptisera officiellement l'aéroport " Queen Juliana " et deviendra " Princesse "

lors de l'abdication de la monarque le 30 avril 1980.

La première ligne régulière fut celle de KLM desservant Curaçao. Le vol durait plus de trois heures.

Je me souviens qu'enfant, les grands parents rentraient en France en bateau. Généralement le paquebot " Antilles ".

La traversée de l'Atlantique en Constellation étant une expédition éprouvante de plus de vingt heures avec escale aux Açores.

Mes grands parents me racontaient qu'a bord de ces avions mal insonorisés, le vol de nuit se faisait en couchette.

Prestation de luxe nommée " Comete d'Or ".

Puis ce sera au tour des Caravelles.

Nous les enfants, ne prenions l'avion que très rarement.

La première fois fût pour aller en Guadeloupe. La seconde pour aller à Trinidad .

Il faudra attendre le milieu des années 80 pour que notre ile ait un vol hebdomadaire direct avec Paris.

Avant cela, nous devions partir la veille et dormir en Guadeloupe car le vol pour la capitale décollait très tôt.

Je revois la terrasse du Raizet à Pointe à Pitre, les adieux, les au revoir. Les baisers envolés, les larmes essuyées.

Se rendre en Europe était un luxe, le billet le moins cher coûtait 12 000 francs !

Véritable natif de la Friendly Island, il a non seulement embrassé la beauté de l'île, mais l'a également intégrée dans ses entreprises créatives.

Né et élevé à Sint Maarten, la passion d'Elvis pour le graphisme l'a conduit sur un chemin artistique, en en faisant sa profession. Cependant, Elvis a ressenti le besoin d'élargir ses horizons créatifs, en ajoutant la photographie à son répertoire pour enrichir son travail avec des images plus personnelles.

Devenu un créatif accompli, Elvis se consacre à la photographie éditoriale et à la photographie de produits. D'un côté, il met en scène avec talent ses sujets dans des images de mode et de style de vie, tandis que de l'autre, il donne vie à la vision de ses clients en mettant en valeur leurs produits à travers des images captivantes.

The shouts echo! The fishermen are back!

Children, with our little arms and big joy, let's help pull, hoist the boats.

In return, we have the right to retrieve the escaped, lost, frantically jumping fish. Here are some "pisquettes," there a trunkfish.
Flying fish appear, and over there, a frightening congereel!

The metal bucket fills up. Mom will be pleased. Sharing is all around.

I see my mother again, I see grandmother, in the tiny kitchen overlooking the sea. Cleaning, stirring. The stove with its capricious flame blackening the pots. The big cauldron quivers. The enormous wooden spoon amuses us... The scents of "blaff," or perhaps stew. The overpowering basil generously growing in the garden, the scallions, the grated nutmeg...

The crackling radio accompanies the day.

Les cris fusent ! Les pêcheurs sont de retour ! Les enfants, avec nos petits bras et notre grande joie aidons à tirer, à hisser les barques .

En récompense, nous avons le droit de récupérer les poissons échappés , égarés , sautillant frénétiquement . Ici des pisquettes, ici un poisson coffre . Des poissons volants paraissent, la, un congre effrayant ! Le seau métallique se remplit.

Maman sera contente. Le partage est général.

Je revois ma mère, je revois grand-mère, dans la cuisine minuscule surplombant la mer. Nettoyant, remuant. Le réchaud et sa flamme capricieuse noircissant les casseroles. Le gros faitout frémit. L'immense cuiller en bois nous amuse... Les odeurs du blaff, ou peut-être du ragoût. Le basilic entêtant poussant généreusement dans le jardin, les cives, les noix de muscade râpées ...

La radio grésillante accompagne la journée. Saint Martin mon île, mon enfance. Antilles Françaises. Années 70.

The idea for the book "SWEET ST MARTIN" was born from a negative comment. An American tourist, who had purchased the book PHOTOGRAPHY from one of our retailers, returned to the shop a few days later to share his impressions. He found it rather "nice" and "pleasant," but not quite "WOW"!

Un touriste américain, ayant acheté le livre PHOTOGRAPHY chez l'un de nos revendeurs, est repassé par la boutique quelques jours plus tard pour faire part de ses impressions. Il l'a trouvé plutôt "sympa" et "agréable", mais pas assez "WOW" !
